Are we facing a dementia tsunami ?

Dementia related diseases are increasing exponentially and we’re experiencing a national shortage of caregivers. Statistics reveal an alarming number of caregivers die before the family member under their care. Caregivers, especially those from the Black community, are not often aware of the resources and support available to them and their loved one suffering. It’s essential that we develop a strong community of caregivers that are professionally trained to take care of themselves and dementia patients.

What is On the Front Porch?

On the Front Porch is a book containing stories told by Black families caring for an aging loved one suffering from a dementia-related illness.

Why is it especially for Black people?

Dementia is two-three times higher in the Black community, often with limited access to healthcare. In an effort to educate and provide accurate information, On the Front Porch demystifies dementia and Alzheimer’s illnesses. Historically for people of color, the front porch was the place where wisdom was passed from the elders to the next generation. In the spirit of this tradition, On the Front Porch recognizes and honors this practice.

Barriers to seeking help:

  1. Lack of information
  2. Mistrust of the health system
  3. Social stigma/shame
  4. Financial burden
  5. Often not referred to a specialist to be properly assessed

  • Share approaches many families are using to support their loved ones
  • Provide tools to guide and anchor the caregiving journey
  • Empower and inspire readers with the confidence to make the necessary decisions for their families
