OUR FOUNDER & CEO
Paula S. Duren, PhD is the founder of Universal Dementia Caregivers (UDC). After years of caring for both of her parents as they steadily declined in memory and awareness, Paula discovered the techniques for addressing the emotional well-being of caregivers and patients.
Prior to founding UDC, she served as a consultant in the areas of change management and leadership development with expertise in executive coaching, guiding organizational change initiatives, and team development. She is an exceptional process facilitator certified in a variety of training programs. And spent eight years at Ford Motor Company as an Internal Consultant and Human Resources Specialist. She was also a Staff Psychologist and member of the faculty at Illinois State University. Dr. Duren has served as adjunct faculty at Wayne State University and Henry Ford Community College.
Paula earned her Ph.D. degree in Counseling Psychology from Southern Illinois University, where she also completed a Masters in Counseling. She has a second Masters degree in Library Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.
OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
David Costa is a practicing attorney and principal investor and Chief Operating Officer of a private equity fund which focuses on metal fabrication and structural steel. As an attorney, Mr. Costa concentrates his practice in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, secured and unsecured lending, leasing, and securities, handling compliance and other corporate finance and corporate transaction matters for publicly-traded companies as well as counseling clients conducting and otherwise participating in private offerings.
Mr. Costa has lent his skills and talents to many non-profit philanthropic endeavors over the years and is now principally focused on his work with Universal Dementia and the Detroit Public Library Friends Foundation where he is a current Board Member. In this capacity, he has most recently led the organization to acquire original art to beautify the Children’s Reading Room of the Detroit Public Library. Mr. Costa is a graduate of the University of Michigan, AB, 1984, and a graduate of The Wayne State University Law School, JD, 1988.
Peter A. Lichtenberg, Ph.D. holds directorships for both The Institute of Gerontology and the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute at Wayne State University. He is the Founding Director of the Wayne State University Lifespan Alliance, and serves as Professor of Psychology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Lichtenberg’s tenure at Wayne State University began in1991 first as the Associate Director of Psychology at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan and since 1998 as the Director of the Institute of Gerontology. He has conducted independent medical evaluations and expert witness work over 75 times in the past 10 years on issues related to older adults and capacity.
He is a clinical psychologist and obtained his Ph.D. at Purdue University and completed post doctoral training in geriatric neuropsychology from the University of Virginia. Dr. Lichtenberg is the author of six books including the acclaimed Handbook of Assessment in Clinical Gerontology (2nd edition) and has published extensively. He has earned numerous awards and distinctions for his tireless work surrounding the elderly.
Kevin Parker is CEO and President of KLP Holdings LLC., a Michigan-based consulting firm exclusively dedicated to providing profit enhancement, interim Management, corporate renewal and turnaround consulting services to under-performing companies. Kevin’s company financed numerous high profile Detroit-based developments including the reconstruction of Detroit Riverside Hospital; Sweet Lorraine's Restaurant and Andiamos Restaurant. His diverse interests have resulted in ownership of several other companies in global Logistics and Warehouse Management Services (both Global); Metal Stamping; global Circuit Board Integration and Adult Foster Care.
Kevin holds two MBAs in Finance and Economics from Wayne State University; BA in Accounting from Michigan State University and is a Certified Public Accountant.
David P Turner is the Chief Operating Officer and founding partner of CNS Hospice, a Medicare and Medicaid certified hospice program, offering end of life care, support and education in the tri-county area since 2014. Prior to founding CNS, David consulted in the development and early operations of several hospice agencies in Metro Detroit. While his area of specialty is the delivery of high quality care to the patients and families of individuals with life limiting illnesses, David has a passion for working with the caregivers of our community’s geriatric population and is an active supporter of many organizations including the Detroit Area Agency on Aging and the Senior Alliance. David is a proud alumnus of Michigan State University.
Monica Starks is the principal of GS Group LLC , the parent company of Green Solutions Environmental Services, Myleadtraining.com and Star Construction & Development. Green Solutions Environmental Services offers services for lead-based paint in residential, commercial and industrial settings. Myleadtraining.com offers lead-based paint training courses for certification in the State of Michigan, environmetal due diligence training, and HAZWOPER Training. Star Construction & Development provides commercial, industrial and residential construction and remodeling services for rough and finished carpentry, concrete, painting, drywall, etc.
